I heard this story on the radio today and thought I'd share. Topsy the Elephant was put to death by electrocution. Topsy was a circus elephant from the early 1900's. She was part of an attraction at Coney Island, New York. She was responsible for killing 3 men including one who tried to feed her a lit cigarette. Her handlers decided that she had to be killed. At first they thought they should hang her but the ASPCA protested. So Thomas Edison stepped in and helped with the electrocution. He used 6000 volts to kill Topsy.

Oh man!
I've recently quit smoking and I too would kill a man/woman trying to feed me cigs. That is brutal yet...One cannot look away.
What the hell radio station was that? Ha!

I heard it on CBC radio. It was on a show about advertising. Edison was trying to promote direct current so he used alternating current to kill the elephant. Edison toured the country(USA) with the video to prove his point. But he lost the battle as AC won out. After I heard the story on the radio I had to get home and see it.
